Project Overview

Creating a meaningful connection between architectural tradition and innovation.

Gerash Gold Market (Bazaar-e Tala) is strategically located on Imam Khomeini Street in the city of Gerash, at a significant urban junction where traditional and modern fabrics of the city meet. This positioning symbolizes the project’s core philosophy: creating a meaningful connection between architectural tradition and innovation.

Before After
Architectural Concept

The market functions as a large-scale treasure trove, housing 51 jewelry shops and storage units distributed across four vertical levels: basement, ground floor, mezzanine, and first floor. Additional facilities include a café, management office, prayer room, and restrooms to serve visitors and merchants.

Drawing inspiration from the city’s cultural heritage, the design incorporates simple architectural patterns and traditional gold designs native to Gerash. This conceptual approach creates a space that honors the region’s rich cultural and architectural history while providing a contemporary shopping experience.

Interior Design

The interior space is thoughtfully divided into two distinct yet seamlessly integrated sections. Variations in lighting and ceiling geometry create different experiential zones for shoppers as they move through the space.

A central feature of the first section is a magnificent skylight, reimagined from decorative patterns found in historical Gerash houses. This design element prioritizes both safety and functionality, providing natural illumination and ventilation for the main market area. The resulting light patterns create an extraordinary interior atmosphere, offering visitors unique spatial experiences through harmonious architectural details.

innovative double-layered façade

Façade Design

After careful site analysis, the project employs an innovative double-layered façade approach:

1. The first layer consists of a pre-constructed concrete structure
2. The second layer features a custom-designed metal skin covering the initial structure

Between these two layers exists a calculated air gap that creates natural airflow. This design leverages the chimney effect to lower the temperature of the inner structural layer, enhancing energy efficiency.

The outer shell comprises three-dimensional metallic shapes inspired by the indentations and protrusions characteristic of regional gold craftsmanship and Gerash’s simple architectural patterns.

minimizing environmental impact

Sustainability Features

The project incorporates numerous sustainable design strategies to minimize environmental impact:

  1. Natural ventilation systems in the central market area
  2. Strategic use of wind currents to reduce wall temperatures
  3. Maximization of natural light through the skylight and façade design
  4. Use of recyclable materials in the second layer of the façade
  5. Material recycling throughout other building components
  6. Implementation of social sustainability principles in the overall design approach
Tradition + Innovation

Gerash Gold Market represents a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation, creating a modern commercial space that respects its cultural context while embracing contemporary sustainable design practices. The project successfully honors Gerash’s rich goldsmithing heritage while incorporating forward-thinking architectural solutions. By interpreting traditional design elements through a contemporary lens, the market creates meaningful connections between past and present, offering visitors not just a shopping destination, but a cultural experience that celebrates the city’s identity. The thoughtful integration of sustainable features demonstrates how commercial architecture can be both culturally significant and environmentally responsible, setting a positive example for future development in the region.
